Why join KBOO’s Board of Directors?
Director, Jamie Bair shares:
In a media landscape increasingly dominated by corporate ownership and narrow perspectives, KBOO continues to stand for something different: people-powered media rooted in justice, creativity, and community.
I serve on the board of The KBOO Foundation because I believe deeply in our mission: to remain an independent, volunteer-powered station focused on equitable social change, knowledge sharing, and fostering creativity with a distinctly Pacific Northwest vibe.
Being a KBOO director matters to me for many reasons:
Defending Independent Media: Community radio is one of the last places where the public truly owns the airwaves. Serving on the board allows me to help protect KBOO’s independence and ensure our station remains accountable to the community, not corporations.
Strengthening Community Power: KBOO is more than a radio station; I believe it’s a shared space for creativity, information, and belonging. KBOO connects people and helps communities share their stories and build power together.
Centering Underheard Voices: KBOO has always been a platform for voices that are ignored or excluded by mainstream media. As a board member, I work to make sure those voices, especially from marginalized and oppressed communities, remain at the heart of what we do.
Learning Through Collective Leadership: KBOO’s community governance model is rooted in collaboration and shared leadership. Serving on the board has been an opportunity to deepen my skills in collective decision-making, organizing, and community accountability.
Supporting those who support us: One of my favorite parts of serving on the board is connecting with the people who support KBOO. I enjoy hearing what they love most about the station and learning their unique stories. No two people have the same connection to KBOO, and those conversations remind me that the station matters to many people for many different reasons. That human connection motivates me to do my best as a board member.
Why become a KBOO director?
If you care about independent media, community storytelling, and building a more just and inclusive world, serving on the KBOO board is a powerful way to make an impact. Directors help guide the long-term vision of the station, support the volunteers and staff who make the programming possible, and ensure that KBOO continues to reflect and serve the diverse communities of our region. It’s an opportunity to help protect a vital community institution and to be part of a collective effort to keep people-powered media alive and thriving.
